Udon Gama-Dashi
About This Spot
Stepping into Udon Gama-Dashi feels like slipping into a quiet corner of Japan without leaving Honolulu. Nestled on Kapahulu Avenue, this intimate spot moves at a gentle, unhurried pace where the focus rests squarely on savoring simple, soulful flavors. The space itself is small but welcoming, with a clean and cozy vibe that invites you to settle in and take a moment away from the island bustle.
Here, the scene is quietly vibrant — a soft murmur of friendly exchanges with attentive Japanese staff, the faint steam rising from bowls of richly crafted broth, and the subtle rhythm of noodles being expertly served. It’s the kind of place where the atmosphere echoes with a sense of care and tradition, far from rushed or impersonal.
The udon itself tells a story of craftsmanship: thick, chewy noodles that hold a gentle bounce, paired with a dashi broth that balances depth and delicacy with such warmth it feels like a comforting embrace. Accompaniments arrive with a thoughtful touch, from crisp tempura bites to tender simmered beef, each adding texture and richness without overwhelming the harmony of the bowl.
This is a spot for those who appreciate authenticity in the quiet details — the way the broth carries subtle layers of umami, how each bowl is a small, satisfying moment rather than just a meal. The friendly service and relaxed flow encourage a dining experience that feels less like consumption and more like a peaceful pause. Parking nearby may require a little patience, but once inside, the calm and carefully curated atmosphere makes every visit feel like a heartfelt journey into the heart of udon.

Most delicious Udon in Oahu. The noodles are “Yawamochi”, thick noodles with an elastic, soft, chewy texture. Unbelievably delicious! The tempura is also a must-do item. We enjoyed the Katsutoji curry udon and the Gobouten Udon with the tempura “A Set” (shrimp, chicken, sweet potato). Overall 10/10!

Great Udon and service. The dashi sauce is one of the best I've ever tasted, they definitely did not skimp on the ingredients. The noodles were nice and chewy like mochi and the dashi sauce was packed with flavor. A nice cold bowl of udon in the 90 degree weather is such a blessing. Love this place!

If you’re tired of the generic, franchise-tasting udon like Marugame, this place is a game changer. Udon Gama-Dashi offers a much more authentic, soul-warming experience. The moment you walk in, you’re greeted by super friendly Japanese staff, and the clean, cozy vibe instantly makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a small shop in Japan. The broth is rich and delicate, the noodles are perfectly chewy, and everything tastes like it’s made with genuine care. It’s not just food—it’s a cultural experience. I’ve been to plenty of udon spots, but this one stands out for its quality and authenticity. If you’re in search of real Japanese udon that doesn’t feel mass-produced, this is the spot. Highly recommend!

Super happy with the experience and food here! Ambience: Super cute, clean small shop with friendly workers, very reminiscent of Tokyo shops. Very easy to park with parking lot right outside. It is kind of a weird service model. They brought us a menu but we had to go up to order and pick up our own food and put our own tray away. Food: We decided to share a bowl since we had just eaten at Ono poke & we were so full but after we finished we wish we had more because it was so good!! We got the regular size cold udon that has chicken tempura, grated daikon, lemon, and green onion and a side of shrimp tempura. The noodles were nice and thick and had chew without being too soft. It was our first time trying cold udon and it was so refreshing. The broth you pour on top was nice and cold and had good flavour that coated the noodles well. The lemon added a nice refreshing zing to it. Tempura: they were made fresh to order so it took a bit of time, but they were both hot and crispy and a great contrast to the cold udon. The chicken tempura was white meat but it was so juicy!!! Although it was lacking flavour. Definitely had to dip it in the sauce otherwise it was too plain. Shrimp was delicious although small. Overall if you were to compare to Marugame, I’d say this shop is a higher quality & more authentic udon shop with a wider variety of options however it is a bit more expensive and would take longer to prepare. I do think they need to change their service style and decide what kind of restaurant they want to be (quick fast food or formal sit down service).

Decent udons with good texture on the noodles and pretty tasty soup base. I like this place’s udon much more than the overly sweet udon soup at the very crowded Marugame in Waikiki. We also had the oyakodon, which was very good. We also tried its mushroom & zucchini tempuras, which were okay, but quite pricy for the quantity. Parking is free for two hours, but you must register with Parkwhiz. It is also a self-serve establishment, meaning that you have to put away your dishes, which I didn’t know that before tipping.
